Protecting Biodiversity
In November 2006, SARAYA teamed up with the Sabah Wildlife Department in support of an important environmental cause: saving one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems - the Bornean Jungle.
In the rainforest of Borneo, elephants, orangutans and hundreds of other forms of wildlife live in harmony with each other.
However, with more and more plantations tearing across the staggering demand for palm oil, Borneo, one of the largest producers, is quickly fragmenting.
This is threatening the unique biodiversity of the island.
Our planet is blessed with palm oil, the most abundant and versatile vegetable oil. While mostly used for edible goods, palm oil has a number of industrial uses including the production of biodiesel. In addition, some of Saraya’s soaps and detergents are made from palm oil for its non-polluting, mild qualities.
However, the ever-increasing demand for palm oil has led the rapid destruction of Borneo’s biodiversity. As a palm oil consumer, Saraya has maintained a close watch over the Borneo ecosystem by working with environmental NPOs and progressing discussion on sustainable palm oil.
